Tyler Ramsey at The Grey Eagle in Asheville, North Carolina and an upcoming contest!!

Tyler Ramsey has been doing his solo tour this month in support of his new album “The Valley Wind”. It has been receiving EXCELLENT reviews, and he has gathered amazing comparisons to the likes of the incredible fingerstyle guitarist John Fahey and the folk/rock legend Neil Young.

I had the pleasure of catching the show in Asheville, North Carolina at the Grey Eagle. When i received the CD, it stayed in my car from release day, until the night of the show. With the disc being 35 minutes long, and my drive to work being 35 minutes long, I knew I would have plenty of time to analyze every single track and learn all of the lyrics before the show. On my way to the show, I was going through in my head which cover song Tyler would do. I know he always does a cover at shows–and while I’m very partial to “These Days”, I really wanted to hear “All Through The Night”.

When I got to the venue, as I pulled in, I could see a tall shadow in the doorway. It was easy to not mistake whose shadow it was. I walked in, and as I’m standing there next to Tyler Ramsey at the merch counter, he is cheerfully greeting everyone coming in and around. I make my way to get situated right up front next to the stage. If you have ever been to a Tyler Ramsey show, you know that you are in for “an experience”. The setting at the Grey Eagle made it even more so intimate, and being in Tyler’s hometown, you knew you were surrounded by friends and family.

When Tyler came out and took the stage, amidst cheers, he quietly sat down, picked up his guitar, and opened up with the instrumental, “Ravenshadow”. A longer version than the 54 seconds on the album, I sat in awe at the fluidity of his fingers on the strings. I looked around and it was almost as if everyone else there was in a trance, completely mesmerized by the sounds coming from the stage. As the show progressed, it only got better and better. Tyler joked about how he had waited until last minute to contact his support, and to make the posters for his show. We were treated to the entire track-list of “The Valley Wind”, along with favorites from “A Long Dream”. A cover of Neil Young’s “Comes a Time” was thrown into the mix, and then Tyler gracefully thanked everyone and exited the stage.

Of course we needed an encore! This my friends, was the magical moment of the night for me! Tyler comes back on-stage, and as he picks up his guitar, he points to his left, and his beautiful wife Joti joins him onstage. As the two sort out the key to the song, I watched at how each of them look at each other, adore each other, completely compliment one another. The song starts. It was the cover of Jules Shear/Cyndi Lauper’s “All Through The Night”! Tyler and Joti singing together is completely love-inspiring, and by far the best way to close the show. Here is a video I took of this lovely performance. I hope you enjoy!

After the show, I had the chance to speak with Tyler briefly. I felt like I had known him my entire life. It was that easy! He is very appreciative of his fans, and expressed this with the biggest heartfelt smile while he greeted everyone waiting to have their chance to say hello.

If you haven’t picked up your copy of “The Valley Wind”, you can do so at iTunes, or at the Fat Possum Records Store. There is still time to catch Tyler on tour if you’re on the west coast! Be sure to check out the three remaining shows here.

Tyler was kind enough to sign a copy of “The Valley Wind”, which will be part of a contest coming up VERY SOON, right here on Ode! So be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the details!

I would like to extend a special thank you to both of the beautiful Mrs. R’s. Thank you so much for your generosity and hospitality.

A List of Lists For Infinite Arms

Alright, so I’ve been doing my best and failing at keeping up with all the year-end lists Infinite Arms is appearing on.  But, with that in mind, I’ve compiled this list of lists where BoH has gotten some well-deserved recognition :)

–The AU Review puts Infinite Arms at the number 12 best album of the year
Live4Ever puts the album at number 23, while commenting on the band’s realized potential.
–The Troy, New York Record places “Factory” as the fourth best song of the year, saying that “Their albums contain some of the most pristine recordings of the past decade and their lyrics always seem to fit perfectly with the music.”
–The Bend Bulletin thinks Infinite Arms is the best album of 2010, saying “[the album] is the sound of a man and a band at the very top of their game,”  and I agree.
–The Chicago Examiner gives “Infinite Arms” the bronze, putting it third on its short list for 2010.
–IndieLondon gives Infinite Arms the nod on their alphabetized year-end list, adding that “Band of Horses have long been acclaimed, but with third studio album Infinite Arms they may just have created their masterpiece.”

And, believe me, there is a ton more where those came from.  The album has earned itself damn near universal acclaim, which gave this particular listener a new faith in music.

Anyway, I hope you guys are all having a wonderful day out there!

Get BoH's (SIGNED) Poster From Austin City Limits!

…And help support a great cause in the process!

Austin City Limits is offering up Mishka Westell’s beautifully designed poster for Band of Horses’ set (which has, by the way, been signed by the band).  Proceeds from the auction will go to benefit the Save Our Springs Alliance of Austin, Texas.  The Save Our Springs Alliance works to protect the Edwards Aquifer, its springs and contributing streams, and the natural and cultural heritage of the Hill Country, Texas region and its watersheds, with special emphasis on Barton Springs.

This is a really great opportunity to get your hands on a one-of-a-kind poster that is not only a memento of an amazing concert but a beautiful piece of art as well, all the while supporting a very deserving cause, indeed.

So, head on over to the eBay auction for the poster and place a bid!

Hope you’re all having a great day out there!

Infinite Arms Placed on Mog's "Best of…" List

The Mog music network, which is comprised of literally millions of songs, recently placed Infinite Arms on its best albums of 2010 list at position number seven!

Now, whenever I share someone’s remarks from another site here, I usually share a snippet or two and then hook you up with a link to the rest of the article.  However, this time I’ve taken the entire quote from the blog (though I still hope you show them some love by reading the other nice things they have to say about the other albums on their “best of” list).  The reason is because I think the author behind these words really, really hits the nail on the head in a lot of different ways.  Says the Mog blog:

Much has been said about the band surrounding this, their third album. Its the old standard, as soon as a band gets a little fame…the purists cry foul. Man, that’s so Pitchforkish… Well, I’m here to tell you, I don’t run much in indie circles..and I didn’t even know of Band of Horses before I heard “Laredo.” But I truly dig this album. It’s warm, inviting and folksy without being too hopeful…..and Ben Bridwell has one of the most beautiful voices this side of Ray LaMontagne. Pure and simple.

Love it :)

Anyway, I hope y’all are having a great day out there!

NPR Listeners Vote BoH Into "Best of…" List!

NPR’sAll Songs Considered” recently tallied up the votes from their annual “Listeners Pick” poll, where listeners and fans vote for their favorite songs of the year.   This year, Band of Horses’ “Laredo” managed to find itself voted all the way up to the 15th best songs of the year!

I was really keeping a close eye on this poll, as it is arranged by fans and listeners and not by critics.   So, it is for that reason that I think Band of Horses’ sitting comfortably in the top 20 is a great achievement, and maybe a little extra-special given that it was decided by thousands of people from all over the country.

Anyway, this definitely brightened my morning, and I hope it brightens yours, too!

Creighton Barrett: The Best Drummer In The World

Recently, thebestdrummerintheworld.com had a chance to sit down with Creighton Barrett and talk about his background as a “metal guy,” his style as a drummer, and some background on Infinite Arms that, I for one, have never heard before and really found interesting.   It’s definitely worth checking out this interview.  Creighton is an amazing and versatile drummer, and is a hell of a nice guy to boot.  Also, do yourself a favor and read the article that was posted along with the videos (and any of the other articles on the site).  Ian Lee’s writing is great to read, and his description of Band of Horses and Infinite Arms is really on-point.

Anyway, enough of me.  Here’s the interview, broken up into two parts.  I hope you’re having a great evening out there!

Ben to Guest on J. Mascis' Solo Project!

Dinosaur Jr. frontman J. Mascis’ upcoming release “Several Shades of Why” is going to feature guest contributions by Ben Bridwell!

For those of you who don’t know, Dinosaur Jr. has been around since the eighties and has made countless contributions to music for many, many years.  J. Mascis, the lead singer and guitarist for them, has also worked on other solo projects, to include the upcoming (and quite anticipated) release.

Now, I am not sure in what capacity Ben contributed to the album or on how many songs, but I am sure it is going to be amazing to listen to.

So mark your calendars for March 15th, the album’s release date.  I am sure it’s going to be a great album, partially courtesy of Mr. Ben Bridwell himself!
