Tyler Ramsey at The Grey Eagle in Asheville, North Carolina and an upcoming contest!!

Tyler Ramsey has been doing his solo tour this month in support of his new album “The Valley Wind”. It has been receiving EXCELLENT reviews, and he has gathered amazing comparisons to the likes of the incredible fingerstyle guitarist John Fahey and the folk/rock legend Neil Young.

I had the pleasure of catching the show in Asheville, North Carolina at the Grey Eagle. When i received the CD, it stayed in my car from release day, until the night of the show. With the disc being 35 minutes long, and my drive to work being 35 minutes long, I knew I would have plenty of time to analyze every single track and learn all of the lyrics before the show. On my way to the show, I was going through in my head which cover song Tyler would do. I know he always does a cover at shows–and while I’m very partial to “These Days”, I really wanted to hear “All Through The Night”.

When I got to the venue, as I pulled in, I could see a tall shadow in the doorway. It was easy to not mistake whose shadow it was. I walked in, and as I’m standing there next to Tyler Ramsey at the merch counter, he is cheerfully greeting everyone coming in and around. I make my way to get situated right up front next to the stage. If you have ever been to a Tyler Ramsey show, you know that you are in for “an experience”. The setting at the Grey Eagle made it even more so intimate, and being in Tyler’s hometown, you knew you were surrounded by friends and family.

When Tyler came out and took the stage, amidst cheers, he quietly sat down, picked up his guitar, and opened up with the instrumental, “Ravenshadow”. A longer version than the 54 seconds on the album, I sat in awe at the fluidity of his fingers on the strings. I looked around and it was almost as if everyone else there was in a trance, completely mesmerized by the sounds coming from the stage. As the show progressed, it only got better and better. Tyler joked about how he had waited until last minute to contact his support, and to make the posters for his show. We were treated to the entire track-list of “The Valley Wind”, along with favorites from “A Long Dream”. A cover of Neil Young’s “Comes a Time” was thrown into the mix, and then Tyler gracefully thanked everyone and exited the stage.

Of course we needed an encore! This my friends, was the magical moment of the night for me! Tyler comes back on-stage, and as he picks up his guitar, he points to his left, and his beautiful wife Joti joins him onstage. As the two sort out the key to the song, I watched at how each of them look at each other, adore each other, completely compliment one another. The song starts. It was the cover of Jules Shear/Cyndi Lauper’s “All Through The Night”! Tyler and Joti singing together is completely love-inspiring, and by far the best way to close the show. Here is a video I took of this lovely performance. I hope you enjoy!

After the show, I had the chance to speak with Tyler briefly. I felt like I had known him my entire life. It was that easy! He is very appreciative of his fans, and expressed this with the biggest heartfelt smile while he greeted everyone waiting to have their chance to say hello.

If you haven’t picked up your copy of “The Valley Wind”, you can do so at iTunes, or at the Fat Possum Records Store. There is still time to catch Tyler on tour if you’re on the west coast! Be sure to check out the three remaining shows here.

Tyler was kind enough to sign a copy of “The Valley Wind”, which will be part of a contest coming up VERY SOON, right here on Ode! So be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the details!

I would like to extend a special thank you to both of the beautiful Mrs. R’s. Thank you so much for your generosity and hospitality.

Free Download & Awesome Interview

>A few months ago Band of Horses was doing their quite lengthy run of in-store performances.  You may remember that they dropped by Amoeba Records this past summer for a rockin' in-store performance.  Well, Amoeba and the band have been kind enough to release their performance of Infinite Arms from the in-store performance for free, along with a pretty lengthy audio interview with Ben!

The interview is really great.  Ben talks about moving around the country and his refrigerator.  It's pretty cool!  In all seriousness, though, I need to add how much I enjoy listening to the interviews.  Ben is always incredibly cool and laid back, even though I am sure he has been answered the same questions about 1,000 times.

At any rate, check everything out below.  I really hope you enjoy it and that your day is off to a great start!

Get BoH's (SIGNED) Poster From Austin City Limits!

…And help support a great cause in the process!

Austin City Limits is offering up Mishka Westell’s beautifully designed poster for Band of Horses’ set (which has, by the way, been signed by the band).  Proceeds from the auction will go to benefit the Save Our Springs Alliance of Austin, Texas.  The Save Our Springs Alliance works to protect the Edwards Aquifer, its springs and contributing streams, and the natural and cultural heritage of the Hill Country, Texas region and its watersheds, with special emphasis on Barton Springs.

This is a really great opportunity to get your hands on a one-of-a-kind poster that is not only a memento of an amazing concert but a beautiful piece of art as well, all the while supporting a very deserving cause, indeed.

So, head on over to the eBay auction for the poster and place a bid!

Hope you’re all having a great day out there!

Band of Horses' Austin City Limits Performance Gets Air Date!

Band of Horses just announced that their TV performance from Austin City Limits will be airing this January 15th on PBS!

This is a great opportunity for those of you who may not have had the chance to catch them on tour this past year to see how well the guys rock it live, so make sure to tune in and check it out!

Now, I am pretty sure that exact airing times differ by location, so your best bet is to go to austincitylimits.org and track down your local listings.

There’s no doubt I’ll be watching that night, and I hope you do, too!  In the meantime, I hope everyone out there is having just a wonderful day!

Ben Organizes Benefit For Andy Kotowicz Family Foundation

On Friday, December 10th, members of Band of Horses and the Gainesville, Florida band Holopaw are going to be playing at The Pour House in Charleston, South Carolina to benefit the Andy Kotowicz Family Foundation.

Kotowicz, Sub Pop Records’ Vice President of Sales and Director of Marketing, was killed in a car accident in October.  The proceeds from the show on the 10th will go to the Andy Kotowicz Family Foundation, which was set up to help out his family.

If you’re in the Charleston area, this is definitely a great opportunity to see some great music and help what could only be described as a noble cause, so go and grab some tickets!

That said, if you’re not near Charleston, there are several other benefit shows and an amazing auction of really rare rock memorabilia (including an autographed copy of Infinite Arms) set up for the Foundation.  A good starting point to find out information about these is the website Sub Pop set up for the Foundation here.

If you have the means, do make sure to donate what you can to help out Mr. Kotowicz’s family.

Thanks very much for reading!

BoH To Be On "Yo Gabba Gabba" This Season

In an interview with The Daily Times of Blount County, Tennessee last week, Christian Jacobs, co-creator of Yo Gabba Gabba, mentioned Band of Horses as a group that would be on the show later on this season.

Now, I have to admit, I’ve not ever heard of this show before that, but dude–they take their music seriously considering it’s a kid’s show!  Previous guests include of Montreal, The Shins, Hot Hot Heat, and The Ting Tings, just to name a few.

It’s pretty cool the band is going to be on a show like this–I would take a wild guess and say that it’s going to be pretty darn cool for Ben’s daughter to see her Dad on television :)

At any rate, if I run across it, I will make sure to pass along the actual date BoH is going to be on the show for you, but considering the reviews the show has gotten and that it’s been a hit across all age groups, it’s probably worth it to check it out in the first place.

Hope you’re having a great day out there!

Mojave 3 To Support BoH In Feb!

The wholly underrated U.K. band known as Mojave 3 is going to be opening up for Band of Horses at their gig on the third of February.  This is an amazing addition to an already incredible lineup that includes Goldheart Assembly and, of course, Band of Horses.  If you’ve not listened to Mojave 3 before, I highly recommend you check them out, especially their epic song “Bluebird of Happiness,” which clocks in at a little over nine minutes but is worth every second, and their song “Most Days” which is just delicate and beautiful.  It’s going to be an awesome night of sound when Mojave 3 gigs with Band of Horses, so don’t miss out!

So far, this is the only gig they have announced with Band of Horses, but I will definitely keep an eye out for more!  In the meantime, I hope your weekend is off to a wonderful start!

Asheville Show Reviewed!

Merchantsofrock.com was on hand along with the enormous crowd for Band of Horses’ homecoming show this past week in Asheville, North Carolina, and it is evident that the band ended their touring year the same way they began it:  with stellar reviews of their shows!

Says merchantsofrock.com author Curt in his glowing review:

Never before have I seen a show where the band’s music seemed to fit the experience of the town as well as Band of Horses fit Asheville. While the show might have ended Thursday night, the band’s music played on for the balance of the weekend’s hikes and mountain drives furthering the great experience. In the end Band of Horses proved to be a spot on live band, and a perfect compliment for all that Mother Nature has to offer.

Those are really great words coming from a really well-written article.  It’s so cool that the band has that kind of effect on people (myself included), not to mention the fact that they can still do that after damn near an entire year on the road.  It’s really a credit to them and how much they care about their fans, which is why I guess I’m kind of bummed that the touring year is over.  Anyway, do go and check the review out–it will be well worth your time!

I imagine there will be more reviews coming down the line from the other hometown shows as well, and I will make sure to keep an eye out for them and pass them along as they do.  In the meantime, I hope you’re having a great evening out there!

Charleston Show Slideshow!

Hey everyone!

Well, as of Saturday night, Band of Horses’ touring year is officially finished.  While I am really happy the guys finally get some real time off from the road, I actually find myself a little sad that I won’t be scrambling around on the internet looking for news, reviews, and pictures about shows.

And, with that, I give you this:  the Charleston City Paper published a gorgeous slideshow of the band’s show on Friday night which you should definitely go and check out, if for no other reason than to see Ben and his adorable daughter Annabelle sharing the stage again.  When you see the picture you will know what I mean :)  It’s just a gorgeous moment shared between father and daughter.

I will keep an eye out for more pictures and reviews of the homecoming shows, but I think that it goes without saying that they were absolutely unbelievable, and that the guys really finished up the 2010 tour in a huge way!  I really hope they enjoy their time off from the road–I imagine it’s awesome for them to be back home and close to family again :)

I hope you are all having an awesome day out there, and will be on the lookout, as always, for more news, reviews, pictures about Band of Horses!
