That’s right I got to see the boys twice in one weekend!!!!
As I was in the very front for the Grand Central Station show, I hung in the back for the Williamsburg Waterfront show and gave others the opportunity to see the guys up closer.
The day was hot indeed and the crowd was restless and drinking heavily. The guys were much more pumped up and enthusiastic at this show as this was the eve before they could finally go home and see their families before they have to head off again to Europe, Australia and Asia.
The opening act blew me away. I wasn’t expecting to like Karen Elson as much as I did. I’m a huge fan of any steel guitar and fiddle music so this band won me over immediately.
Following Karen Elson was Grizzly Bear which was a great performance as well. But let’s face it, you all know who I came there to see.
The band came on stage all looking well rested and happy to be there. They greeted the crowd and began with “Am I a Good Man”. I was beside myself ecstatic to hear this tune live. I wanted them to play it so bad and here they were opening with it. It was awesome. That’s a good old soul tune and Ben’s voice just makes the tune much more so then the original. With Ryan singing along with him it makes for a great opener and really got the crowd into the show right off the bat.
They went on to play all their usual of course throwing JJ Cale’s “Thirteen Days” in there. Again..stellar.
Now as everyone knows with every out door show comes that fan that just gets unbelievably drunk and starts screaming at the band at inappropriate times and jumping up and down and irritating those around them. Ben took it upon him self to take this guy on and engage in conversation. “What’s your name Dude?” And hence we all met “Andrew”.
Andrew was then incorporated into BoH’s tunes and some new tunes were made up as the show progressed. I quote the lyrics out of Ben’s mouth from “Cigarettes and wedding Bands that night”
“The drunk fucks in the crowd… for crying out loud!!”
The apt building behind the stage even decided to incorporate Andrew into the show with the following:

It was quite the evening!!! Entertainment for all!!! Eventually Andrew got out of hand and was bounced out of the venue. The band sang…”No one’s gonna Love you more than Andrew…” “Someone…should have warned Andrew” And suddenly he was back!. So Andrew was only away from us for a short period of time and was let back in to catch the encore.
The band has been playing on tour and away from home for 72 days and they gave it their all once again to a happy crowd. Everything I wanted to hear was played including “Blue Beard” and since I was in the back this time, I had room to move around and stomp my boots and sing from the top of my lungs without being an “Andrew”.
The treat was hearing them close with the chorus to “Neighbors” . Which I read at one point the band does not play life as it’s a difficult song to sync just right played live. But man they nailed it and I was so happy to hear them play it loud and play it really well!
I hope those boys have an amazing two week break with their families. They deserve every moments peace they get. I know it will be quite some time before I get to see them back in my woods again. But I’ll wait patiently. I know they’ll be back around.
I didn’t bring my camera to this show but I’ve attached a link that got some awesome shots of the show.
Do not miss this band of they come to your town folks. Skip work if you have to. Beg steal or borrow a ticket and get to a show. You won’t regret one single minute of it.
